Annual Padhaku Sports Day
(23rd March, 2018)

The Annual Padhaku Sports Day'18 was a fun filled event. It started off with telling the students about sportsmanship and how inculcating it in our lifestyles was a necessity in order to achieve happiness in life. The children were then divided in four groups according to their classes and separate activities and competitions were held among the same. A Lemon and Spoon Race was the show starter for the kids of classes 1 to 3, followed by Race, ultimately ending with a fun Origami session to teach them the importance of art and creativity in our lives. For students of classes 4 and 5, the merry environment was created with a Balloon race, followed by a Jalebi race and then concluding with 50 metre Race. The children of classes 6 and 7 were shown the importance of coordination and team spirit with a Three-Legged Race and a Relay Race. A Cycle Race was also conducted. For the kids from classes 8 to 12 the fun started with a Slow-Cycling Competition wherein they had to focus on maintaining balance, even if it meant going slow, to ultimately reach success. Surprisingly enough, in both rounds, the kids who were initially the slowest ended up winning the prize for the first position. Then the lot was split in four teams and couple rounds of Kho-Kho were conducted between two groups each. It was very interesting to see the children getting so involved in the game and putting their best foot forward in order to win the game. Ultimately, the competitions were brought to an end with a game of tug of war. The day was concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and discussing the merits of sports in life and all the qualities and lessons they learnt through these multiple games. The kids went home with trophies for their outshining performances and a bucketload of memories.

Initiative to provide Employment to Ladies of Yamuna Khadar and Anand Parvat
(21st March, 2018)

We, at NSS Hansraj, believe in equal opportunities for both men and women. We believe in empowering women, who later can become strong leaders and entrepreneurs and lay the foundation of a developed and happy nation. Carrying this vision forward, NSS Hansraj in collaboration with Enactus Ramjas' women empowerment unit- Aradhaga, has taken an initiative of providing employment to ladies in areas of Yamuna Khadar and Anand Parvat. With the help of an NGO- Lakshyam our aim is to market at least 30,000 bags per month. The number of bags given to each woman will range from 500 bags to 2500 bags. The initiative, being taken under the flagship project PARVARISH, is a great responsibility on our shoulders. This initiative has the potential to change the lives of these women for the better; forever. These women, living in these areas, are marginalised to the very core. Providing them with stable means of livelihood will not just make them financially stable; but also provide them with an avenue of empowerment and putting their opinions forward. Through this project, we will act as a potential link between them and the outside world. All of this, we believe, will trickle down to the day to day dynamics, empowering these women and financially and socially stabilising them too. Here's to a glorious past and a promising future!

Cleanliness Drive
(15th March, 2018)

We, at NSS Hansraj, take great pride in the successful endeavour that we pulled through after the exultant celebrations of the Annual Festival of Hansraj College- Confluence 2018. Often it comes to notice that once the celebrations are over, all of us in ecstasy don't pay attention to the sanitation and hygiene of the venue, marking it with dirt and filth. NSS Hansraj took this responsibility on the chin and with the help of several volunteers and the College staff too, organised a cleanliness drive after the festive celebrations, marking the areas with absolute cleanliness. This measure also attracted the praise of our principal, Dr Rama. We hope that this endeavour of ours goes a long way in setting a trend where we do indulge in festivities but don't ignore our responsibilities towards our college's ambience at the end of the day.

UTSAV
(13th March, 2018)

NSS Hansraj celebrated the second day of Utsav on 13th March with zeal and enthusiasm. The fest was organized in LP which was decorated with colourful hangings and props relating to the Theme of the FESTIVALS OF INDIA. There were numerous stalls with mini-games which served with entertainment and a side platter of social awareness. In the 'Holi' stall, there was a palette of colours in which people dipped their thumb and used their thumbprints to help complete the tree drawn on a paper, after taking a pledge of planting and saving trees. 'Picture the Reality' was another interesting game where the participants after having guessed the movie from a clip showed to them, had to give a remedy for a social problem presented in the film. Another highlight was the treasure hunt competition. With clues spread around the college, it was a fun adventure. Bulb painting and doodle making competitions were also held which saw beautiful entries. And since festivals in India come with a promise of sweets along with them, Utsav was no exception. Everyone enjoyed the rolling ice cream. The event was a great success which was evident from the joyous response of the crowd. After days of toil and anticipation, the efforts of the NSS team bore sweet fruit and thus ended another successful undertaking.

UTSAV At Yamuna Khadar
(11th March, 2018)

Commemorating the very spirit of the society, NSS Hansraj pushed the conventional boundaries and celebrated UTSAV-2018 in Yamuna Khadar with the locals at the grass root level. Attended by the volunteers and the coordinators alike, the festivity was surely a symbolic metaphor of our ever striving efforts to ensure that all the values, privileges and services trickle down to ground zero and not just be confined to the boundaries of our college. Under our flagship programme PARVARISH, NSS has truly tried to play a pivotal role to change the lives of the inhabitants of the slum in every dimension. A number of positive endeavours have marked noteworthy developments in the spheres of education, health, provisions and awareness alike. The grand celebration of UTSAV-2018 was a commemoration of the same. The day of the exultation commenced by the organising of a Medical Camp for the locals in partnership with the supreme Hospital Chain, Medanta. NSS identified the health menace that the inhabitants had been facing due to lack of hygiene and sanitation facilities, and the camp was a step in facing the same challenge. But the celebration part was yet to arrive. In addition to this, at completely different dimensions, a number of games were also organised by NSS Some worth mentioning are the 'Tyre Race' and the 'Lemon Spoon Race' which filled the atmosphere with enthusiastic cries and festive spirits. A drawing competition was held too, to peek into the minds of our young artists. The endeavour was certainly a noteworthy one to ascertain that the colours of the imagination don't remain confined but are allowed to let fly. Meanwhile, a cuisine delight of _chole bhature_ and _gulab jamun_ was served to the locals, with much enthusiasm. In addition to all of this, a Mehendi competition was also organised for women, but also saw a positive response from the volunteers themselves. To strengthen the intra-societal bonds, a 'war of songs' aka a game of Antakshari was played too with great fun. The day ended on a positive note, with Mr Anurag Jhamb marking everyone with bliss. His soft voice yet impactful words, penetrated deep into everyone's hearts, serving as a constant reminder of the services that we all owe to humanity. NSS takes great pride in having enthusiastically celebrated UTSAV 2018 in Yamuna Khadar, this is surely the first of many more to come, a subtle reminder of our responsibilities as a society and a celebration of our spirit as a whole. We thank Dr. Shubhank Singh and his team for their immense support.

(17th February, 2018)

The much-awaited annual Padhaku trip happened on 17 February. The morning was filled with excited chatter and after the attendance, everyone boarded the two buses. Since travel is incomplete without antakshari, the volunteers made sure to follow the tradition. All sorts of songs and all sorts of voices resounded in the buses. The first stop was Bal Bhawan where activities like clay modeling, painting and science experiments were done according to the age group. The students also visited the aquarium, the Panchatantra room with drawings and 3D models of stories and the museum of wooden carvings and hand-loomed cloth. The room with little models of India's glorious mythological and historical past was viewed with awe. Another fun thing was the toy train which started from Delhi and made the passengers roam the whole of India. Following this, lunch was served and the party departed for Rashtrapati Bhawan. The President's residence was grand, to put it mildly. After the group photograph outside the main building, a lady guide showed everyone various rooms and gifts and mementos that had been given to the President of India over the years. She explained the history and the origin of the embellishments of the vast rooms like the carpets and the paintings. It was a beautiful sight. Some volunteers had branched off during the journey to the Rashtrapati Bhawan and visited the museum in the premises. It was surrounded by a lush green park and had valuable antique articles from the lives of the Head of the State of India. They had their fun with the rides which also provided the occasion for silly photos and playful banter. Just like that, the time passed and they returned. But there was still something to smile about, because who doesn't enjoy an ice cream. The kids departed with joyous faces and toothy grins. The trip gave everyone a day of fond memories and delightful times.

After this, many students stayed back to become a part of their pre-Valentine day celebrations. Dance, dumb charades and general banter and laughs ensued. Several people shared their stories, equally inspiring and emotional. Eventually, it was time to go. With the people as warm as the chai and samosa that they had served, it was a wonderful experience. As a part of the mainstream society, one usually doesn't realise the hardships that the people from the LGBTQ community face at every step. "Some kids wish to be a cowboy, to be a princess, to be a chef, to be a farmer; other kids wish for a cure so that they can grow up." NSS Hansraj, on the 5th day of love week, was overwhelmed to plan and organise a visit to meet the children of Cankids- a foundation for children suffering from cancer. The visit started with origami lessons by our volunteers in which the children showed great enthusiasm in making windmill, paper boxes and paper shirt. Soon after the origami began the interesting game of riddles and brain teasers. Children solved the riddles, displaying a great sense of fun and enthusiasm. As usual, story narration is indispensable, when it comes to interacting with these cuties, and so was the case that day. These kids were enthralled on hearing interesting Panchatantra stories, narrated by our volunteers. Poem recitation and nursery rhymes by some little champs and finding morals in the stories also added grace to this day. The volunteers felt nostalgic after playing board games with the little kids and losing to them in these games was like a victory. Facts around the galaxy and the words of wisdom further filled the kids with some knowledge banks. In exchange for the quality time spent, the team of NSS Hansraj donated chocolates, fruits and flavoured milk to the children. Love of volunteers towards these kids was reflected in the hand-made cards gifted to them. The visit came to an end with the honour of Snehograha's caretakers by the NSS President, and a warm salute to all these heroes, who are brave and cheerful enough to hinder us from realising that they are afflicted with cancer.

Complimenting this spirit, the theme of the event was "A Dream" and the visit consisted of activities spun around it. After the introductions, everyone talked about their dreams. Many of the children had a shared interest in dance, maybe owing to their dance teacher who they look up to. This was followed by a tradition at Katkatha - a prayer to the God for the fulfilment of the dreams of your fellow mates. In this positive frame of mind, the volunteers then talked about the importance of effort and not giving up quoting examples from the lives of Martin Luther King and fun short incidents of their own lives. The poem "Koshish Karne Walo Ki Kabhi Haar Nahi Hoti" by Harivansh Rai Bacchan was recited for further emphasis. Learning is best when it is fun. The nostalgia of the good old days, marked by the absence of all the superficiality and _technology_ but boasting of the scintillating presence of humility and mutual respect stimulated all emotionally. Taking a trip down the spine, most of them had tears in their eyes, narrating the stories of their life. Nevertheless, the whole experience was emotionally satisfying and edifying. The volunteers endeavoured to lift their spirits high by performing a song; all of which was highly appreciated and many elderly people joined in too. NSS Hansraj donated peanut brittle and _poha_ as per the requirement that was stated by the staff members too. The volunteers also got a wonderful opportunity to interact with Dr. Bhagat, one of the founding members of the old age home. Most of the elderly who live in these old age homes are either rescued from the streets or procured through police/hospital authorities. Many of the times, they've rescued people who were left to perish by their own families, just because of their mental and physical illnesses. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has been involved in alleviating the sufferings of the dying, destitute people who don't have anyone to look after them. N.S.S. (3rd November, 2017)

"An attempt to deal away with women harassment." NSS Hansraj has never supported women harassment and always stood against the indifferent behaviour of our society towards the atrocities inflicted towards women. Driven by this notion, NSS Hansraj organized a street play "DASTAK" in collaboration with Sukhmanch theatre group to bring out this social evil; the venue being Bhalswa on 2nd November, and Yamuna Khadar on 3rd November. It was based on the acts of cruelities against women and aimed at enlightening the masses about the flaring problem of women harassment. The event was initiated by mobilising the masses and motivating them to take their stand and get the matter reported as soon as possible, because most often the cases go unreported. The awareness campaign concluded with an interactive talk by the Rural Development volunteers, in an attempt to have an insight into the victims' lives and the distress they have to face. We, at NSS Hansraj, are anticipating to organise more such public awareness campaigns.

Notebook Donation Drive at Yamuna Khadar Slum
(9th October, 2017)

'A person's most wonderful asset is not only a mind full of materialistic knowledge, but also a heart full of compassion, a soul brimming with love and a hand always willing to help others.' We, at N.S.S. Hansraj take immense pride to state that we observed a notebook donation drive in the Yamuna Khadar slum on October 9, 2017 with great exaltation. The altruistic drive was spearheaded by Mr. Ramesh Mehta, an ex-employee of Hansraj College and a dedicated social activist. Mr. Mehta took a wonderful initiative to distribute study-utilities to the needy and set an example for all to follow. N.S.S. Hansraj feels exuberant to be an associate of this drive. Yamuna Khadar slum, inhabited by a huge number of people living in the lack of proper sanitation and hygiene, has been adopted by N..S. S. Hansraj under the 'Parvarish' project and hence a number of donation drives, health camps and awareness programmes are undertaken regularly to alleviate the sufferings of the people. Under the umbrella of this benevolent drive, Mr. Mehta inspired the children from the Slum Area to study hard and to pave their own way to success in future. We, at N.S.S. Hansraj, believe that education is the best channel to bring about emancipation. We stand at an elevated moral setup that only monetary help eventually adds to the misery of the people in the long run and hence educating them and providing them with useful vocational skills is the only way to channelise them into mainstream society and to inspire them to carve a niche for themselves. And after all, on a concluding note, 'The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others'

"Best Out of Waste" Competition
(26th September, 2017)

"Art requires perspective. What is garbage to someone might seem beautiful to someone else." N.S.S. Hansraj observed a "Best Out of Waste" competition on 26th September 2017 with great exhilaration. The contest was organised in front of N.S.S. room from 1:00 PM onwards and saw a great number of participants turning up for the creative cause. Following the streak of series of events to promote cleanliness amongst the citizens of India, this competition was conducted to foster creativity in the students and was extremely well received. Students from an array of courses took part in the contest and displayed their individual originality. In the status quo, specifically in the Indian Context, competitions like these go a long way in establishing the sublime originality of the youth. In India, where we, as a country, are still struggling to provide clean and pristine environment to our people, where there is a dearth of circumspection, the contest succeeded in planting a dormant seed of positivity in the students. It illuminated the fact that you just need a creative mind to see positives amongst the negatives and the opportunities amongst the clutter. The event was a highly successful one, and the winner of the contest, Ankita Rajkumar Patil was felicitated too. It was a day of great exuberance and added great depths to the students' creative streaks. In the words of Sir Albert Einstein: "Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony, Amidst difficulties lies opportunity."

A Word on Gender Sensitisation
(21st September, 2017)

An initiative to eradicate gender bias. NSS Hansraj, in collaboration with WDC Hansraj, organised a workshop on gender sensitisation on Thursday i.e. 21st September, 2017 in room A-209 from 1:00 pm. It was all about the mentality of people to judge others on the basis of their gender. The event was marked by the presence of Inspector Meena, Incharge of Parivartan Cell of Delhi Police and Dr. Jayanti Dutta, a Retired Professor of Psychology. The most common instances where the gender of a person is called into play are dowry, rape, and homosexuality, which were in the limelight during today's discussion. Dowry was aptly summed up in these words- "A girl should never marry a boy, who is not capable enough to take up her responsibility and is thereby resorting to dowry. And if a boy really wants to resort to this practice then he should rather opt for beggary in temples." Rape emerges out as the worst act which can be committed by an individual- even worse than the murder because it is the soul which is hurt. The Nirbhaya case still gives horror shrills to each and every individual of India. The talk concluded with a word on gender equality because women are in no way inferior to men as they carry a life in their womb. The thought provoking fact to ponder upon is - "Respect for the homosexual people is a must because if God had thought homosexuality is a sin, he would not have created these people."

She also delivered a deeply engrossing talk on how many adolescents cannot cope with stress in their lives and ultimately commit suicide, and how it's an alarming situation for us. Ms. Ahuja, during the talk, also presented an Android application: "Iwill" . The application basically seeks out to ascertain a person's mental health with the help of general questions. The attending volunteers were encouraged to download the application too. For the culmination of the session, Ms. Ahuja and the volunteers made valuable additions to the discussion that how stress needs to be dealt with more efficiency and how it is a wake up call for acknowledging a person's mental health and stress levels. The exquisitely intriguing discussion proved to be of great benefit to the students. Cloth Donation Drive
(18th July, 2017)

On 18th July, Core team members of NSS Hansraj visited Yamuna Khadar near Shastri park, our adopted area under the initiative"Parvarish" for a cloth donation drive. Earlier in the year, a collection drive for these clothes was organized, in which members of teaching staff, non teaching staff and students participated with a great degree of enthusiasm. It is better to donate than accumulate things which can prove to be very useful for someone else. It gave us immense pleasure to see the broad smiles on their faces. We were successful in providing a basic amenity-clothing to underprivileged people of the area and we'll continue to work for their upliftment and betterment in the future.

Yoga Camp
(19th June, 2017)

Hansraj college organised a three day yoga camp from 19th June to 21st June with the collaborative efforts of NSS and NCC. Many students of the college, teaching as well as non teaching staff participated very enthusiastically in the camp. Members of the Bhartiya Yog Sansthan were invited to teach yoga. They performed and taught each asana while emphasizing the role of yoga in stabilizing the body, mind and emotions. The yoga session in college was followed by an enlightening session on the importance of yoga by Dr. Varun Arya. He has set a milestone in yoga by entering the Limca book of records. He spoke about how yoga enhances vitality, focus, memory and productivity. We hope that the session imparted a lasting sense of joy, peace and fulfillment in all the participants.
